Since Toyota began importing vehicles to the United States in 1957, their vehicles have been making headlines and making their way into the American consumer’s hearts. The first car that started Toyota on its rise to popularity was the 90 horsepower Corona Sedan that debuted in 1965. Since then, Toyota has built a full line of Toyota cars, trucks and SUVs, one of which is the world’s first mass production hybrid, the Prius. America has welcomed the quality, dependability and reliable of Toyota vehicles, giving them one of the most loyal customer followings in the automotive industry. Two members of the Toyota family, the Tacoma and Tundra, have steadily been increasing in popularity and are providing formidable competition.
Tacoma and Tundra have much to offer
Toyota offers two choices, the midsize Tacoma and full-size Tundra. The Tacoma is available in a variety of trim levels from a 2.7-liter four-cylinder regular cab two-wheel drive to a 4.0-liter V6 double cab four-wheel-drive. The regular and access cabs offer a six foot bed and the double cab comes standard with a five foot bed with the option of the six foot. Towing capacity may not be as the full-size at 9,000, the Tacoma is still a very versatile truck. The 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine offers 159 horsepower and the 4.0-liter V6 puts out 236 horsepower. The Tacoma made its debut in 1995 and received a complete redesign in 2005. While many other companies have discontinued their midsize and compact truck offerings, the Tacoma has held on thanks to Toyota’s devoted fans.
The full-size Toyota Tundra is a tough truck with great towing capability that offers a wide variety of styles and sizes. It is available in a regular cab, double cab and CrewMax versions. It also offers three engine choices depending on what you plant to use your new Tundra for. The 4.0-liter V6 offers 270 horsepower, the 4.6-liter V8 offers 310 and the 5.7-liter V8 offers a generous 381 horsepower. For 2014, the Tundra has been updated with a variety of interior and exterior updates and has added a new trim, the special 1794 Edition. The lockable, removable tailgate now features as integrated “spoiler” that helps fuel efficiency. Inside the cabin is a change in controls for the audio and heating, ventilation and air conditioning, which have been shifted, a bit closer the driver.
